I had been thinking for a while that there's got to be a better way to show the images here. I had been making albums. Uploading images to the album. Then linking to them in a thread. At the time it seemed to be about the only way to show images.
So I went on the prowl for a script that would show the image in a hands free format. Sliders they're called. I tried several of them and settled on a couple of them. One went at the bottom of the forum on one theme while another went in a CMS widget. Problem with either is in the script you had to list the urls for any of the images you wanted to show. PITA!!! I even went as far as adding a rotator script to them so it would show different images each time you looked at either one. Neither one of the slider scripts are currently in use.
Why, you ask? Well I'll tell you why, fellow anime fans.
On one of my dive's into the net I stumbled on a site that is using Gallerific(sp?). I thought, "Damn, that's nice". I did a view source and got the name of the script and took off on a Google search for it. I found out it was a duded up slider script. You still had to put in a link to each image you wanted to show. So that was out.
But the Google search did put me on to some sites that have lists of where to find image displaying scripts. I have to say the way a couple of these lists are laid out shows someone put a lot of work in to them. Screenshots and links. Like a kid in a candy shop, I went looking. I nabbed the script for the widget from one list and a gallery script from another.
The widget one had the typical short coming of limited links. And thanks to a member at VB org tipping me off to some SERIOUS security issues, the gallery script was shown the door.
I kept looking... Searching... Not giving up... I want a gallery for my images!!!
Armed with the knowledge that some open source scripts have long since been abandoned, I checked for last update and if they had reported security issues. I took a long hard look at Gallery3. The last update was in the April May of 2011 time frame. No reported security issues.
Now let me clear something up before going on with this dissertation. Gallery3 is not a script. It is a stand alone program. It requires a place to park it and a MySql database. It doesn't store the images in the database but instead puts them in the file system. VB has an option for that also. That keeps the DB nice and lean. No fat on that baby.
This program comes out of the box with one free theme. It has a css sheet that allows for editing the appearance. I'm still muddling my way through that, learning as I go. I've got a handle on some of it but not all of it. So far, so good.
I made a sub-domain, created another DB, then uploaded the program package to the ftp.
There is no installer script you have to run. It has a first time you go there set up. Slick!
You feed it the info for the DB and it's up and running. Super Slick!
There is something I will tip you off about if you decide to use this one.
The first album you make is the root directory for the rest of the albums. Don't put any images in the first one. You'll see what I mean if you go look at mine. Other than that, piece of cake.
Guess I better put a link up, huh?
